A project to allow people to find out about the world of the wax cylinder format that kicked off the whole industry of recorded sound from the 1890s.
Musicians, performers and composers are invited to create a piece for recording on to a wax cylinder and to attend and online event to share the results played back on original Edison phonographs with other participants and enthusiasts.
If you are interested we would like you to create a 2 min audio file of their work that can be transcribed to a wax cylinder this could be almost anything, from the experience of creating the track in one take acoustically without editing, or it might be an electronic piece generated to suit the format.
Contact us to let us know you are interested.
You will be sent you a form to complete to secure a place.
Send the file in MP3 or Wav as soon as possible
We will cut a wax cylinder of the audio and record a playback from a phonograph so that you can hear the result.
There will be an online event (using zoom) on 11 September, time to be confirmed which we would like the all contributors to attend so they can share the results and experiences of the process.
All rights to recorded works remain with the contributor and will only be used for the project and the event.
The cutting and playing of the wax cylinders will be manged by Duncan Miller owner of the Vulcan Cylinder Record Company Sheffield England
