Children of color are often not represented in the children’s books that are currently available on the mainstream market. All children need to see themselves and their peers in the stories to be able to relate. However, not being represented leaves children of color feeling marginalized, invisible, and not part of this world. This starts even before children can read books themselves by the illustrations and pictures that are shown to them. If we want to create an inclusive society, we need to ensure that all children are represented in the literature, and their existence is validated – starting from as early as possible. The intention of the project is to create an inclusive children’s book, targeting 2-4 years old children. The book will represent a mixed-race family, where the first-born is being introduced to a new baby in the family. When children of color see themselves represented and their existence validated, it will make them feel empowered and that they belong. It will also contribute to an inclusive society in the long run.
